The Jazz 98.5 FM JazzCast Program

JazzCast is a music enrichment Live Broadcast radio music program

created by Jazz 98.5 to harness and display through radio broadcasts, the

talent and energy of our young musicians that through them, help keep the pipeline full of budding and aspiring future composers, writers and performers,

and equally important, preserve and help keep the future of jazz music alive.

This program will also introduce elementary school students to jazz music

and show how it has influenced American culture.

Through live performance, narration and interaction with musicians, the JazzCast program demonstrates how jazz developed through social, economic and political changes in our country's history, and what sets jazz apart from other musical forms. The JazzCast program also gives students a better understanding of the wide variety of music available to them as they begin to make personal

choices about preference and style. We believe the experience will help

children and adults begin to appreciate jazz as fun music to listen to and

an important part of our American heritage.

The JazzCast program is centered around a collaboration between Jazz 98.5 FM and area middle and high

school music directors to broadcast the performances of their respective jazz bands and ensembles. Other

young people and adults, are invited to listen via radio, whether terrestrially or Internet, as well as to attend the

live broadcast performances, whether convened in the Jazz 98.5 studios or in school auditoriums.

The JazzCast program can include performances given solely by student jazz bands or ensembles and also

include performances by resident JazzCast professionals. Here is what you can expect:

Students will learn the historical facts and origins of jazz and how jazz developed and evolved.

Students will be able to showcase their individual school jazz band or ensembles.

JazzCast broadcast performances can be augmented by performances of participating professional

jazz bands or JazzCast resident professionals.

Musical selections will illustrate basic jazz concepts, periods and styles.

The presentation can be done once for the entire student body, or broken up into separate groups,

with slightly different presentations for younger vs. older student groups

In formal broadcast performances, the broadcasts can be developed to also benefit the school

music program through ticketed sales to parents and the general public. Proceeds will support both

the individual schools and the Jazz 98.5 JazzCast program and fundraising efforts.

JazzCast is designed to be a flexible enrichment radio broadcast program that can easily be transported from

virtually any remote location and can be added to any existing curriculum. Each teacher who decides to

participate in the program can use the resources of the JazzCast program and tailor their individual program to incorporate into their presentation or assembly, workshops or professional performances by the JazzCast staff musicians in residency.
